A widely discussed topic with (S-)pedelecs is the range. In addition to other influencing factors, this largely depends on the energy content [Wh] of the battery. However, there are limitations to the battery size, and thus to the available energy, due to size and weight restrictions. Similar to electric cars, users want the greatest possible range, even if they may never need it in everyday life. Manufacturers are responding to this with ever larger batteries or additional battery solutions.
In 2022, Stromer launched the ST7 model with its 1440 Wh battery, one of the largest in the industry. This allows for ranges of 80 to 100 km with full support, which is usually sufficient for regular commuters. However, with the BQ1440 battery, Stromer also maximized the frame size, specifically the downtube. A further increase in battery capacity is likely only possible with a battery integrated into the frame triangle or with a separate additional battery (extender). An example of this is the niche brand Speedped, which offers a battery in the frame triangle with up to 2430 Wh.
Range factors
The manufacturer's stated range should be taken with a grain of salt, just like the fuel or energy consumption figures for cars. While cars have the WLTP standard, (S-)pedelecs lack one. Direct comparisons are difficult because the possible range depends on very many factors:
- System weight (rider, luggage, bike)
- Selecting and setting the speed levels
- Personal performance (fitness of the driver)
- Efficiency and type of drive (rear or hub motor, rear derailleur)
- Route profile
- Altitude meters
- Number, steepness and length of the climbs
- Underground
- Stops & Goes
- Weather conditions:
- Temperature
- Wind conditions (tailwind or headwind)
- Rain, snow, dry...
- Air resistance
- Seating position
- Driver size
- Luggage
- Driving technique
- Cadence
- Switch ergonomics
- Recuperation Yes/No
- Tire pressure and tread
- Condition of wearing parts (e.g. chain)
- Condition of the battery (ageing, state of charge)

A general range table for different battery voltages and capacities can be found on Amazon, for example. Based on my experience, it seems quite realistic to me.
